GM plots RWD offensive; Camaro to be priced against Mustang

In the next six months, GM will select the vehicles it plans to build as part of a new rear-wheel-drive lineup set for 2008 or 2009. Possible candidates include the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac GTO, Buick Velite, and Chevy Impala. "We have a big plan for rear-wheel drive," says Gene Stefanyshyn, vehicle line executive for what GM now calls its "global RWD architecture." GM is looking to fill the gap between its small RWD roadsters, from Saturn and Pontiac, and high-end luxury vehicles, from Cadillac. If produced, the Camaro would feature a standard V6 engine and one or two V8s, GM's Bob Lutz says. It would be priced competitively with the Mustang.
