Report: Mercedes likely to produce S-Class four-door cabrio

When rumors first broke in June that Mercedes was planning a four-door convertible concept car based on the Mercedes S-Class, enthusiasts around the globe were surprised, and perhaps somewhat confused.

Of course, the idea isn't entirely new. In the 1950s, the German automaker offered a four-door convertible called the Mercedes 300.

But more surprising than the prospect of a four-door convertible concept are reports from Automotive News Europe today that the vehicle could become a production car within a year. A source within Mercedes told the trade publication the company will produce the niche V12 rag-top for the 2009 model year. The concept will be on display at the Detroit auto show in January.
