Volkswagen Space Up! Concept breaks cover

At the Tokyo Motor Show today, Volkswagen revealed a five-door minivan version of its Up! concept, which was unveiled in three-door guise at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.



Called the "Space Up! Concept," the five-door version is nine inches longer than the first Up! concept. It features reverse-hinged "suicide" rear doors providing easy access to seating for four.

Recent media reports indicate VW has production ambitions for the Up! model series. Assembly will likely begin in September of 2010 at VW's Skoda plant in the Czech Republic, according to Automotive News Europe. The car will be sold under the VW, Skoda and Seat brands with an annual sales target of 100,000 for each.

The first Up! to make it to market will be the three door model originally shown in Frankfurt with a price of â,¬8,950. The five door model "”- shown in Tokyo -- will follow shortly after with a price of â,¬9,450. Look for VW to offer several other body styles, including an SUV, insiders claim.
