MINI crossover to be called the Countryman?

Our spy photographers have been tracking MINI's forthcoming crossover model - in both base and performance S trim levels - for several months now, but the BMW-owned British brand could be planning a name change just before the vehicle's launch.

Until now, MINI's upcoming crossover has been referred to as the Crossman. However, a recently revealed BMW trademark seems to indicate MINI could have a different name in mind for the CUV - the Countryman.

According to the MINI fan site Motoring File, BMW has registered the name Countryman for trademark. The Countryman is a classic MINI nameplate and has historically been reserved for MINI's long-wheelbase models. As the upcoming CUV promises to be MINI's largest offering, the Countryman nameplate would seem like a logical choice.

MINI has yet to reveal what it will call its new crossover model, but we won't have to wait very long. The MINI crossover will be revealed at this September's Frankfurt Motor Show, so expect to hear the final word on the CUV's name before that.
