Report: MINI, Toyota could share small car technology

MINI will start a trend towards even small product offerings with production version of the Coupe and Roadster concepts for the 2011 model year, but the British brand won't be stopping there. MINI is reportedly holding discussion with Toyota about a possible micro car tie-up.

According to Edmunds, MINI parent BMW is in talks with Toyota over a possible small car collaboration. Although not set in stone, the deal could see a future MINI based on the next-generation of Toyot's iQ mini car. In return, Toyota could get versions of the forthcoming MINI Coupe and Roadster.

The small car tie-up could even spread to the BMW nameplate. BMW has long been mulling a new age version of its Isetta small car, and Toyot's iQ architecture could serve the basis for the production version.

Additionally, BMW is said to be discussing if the MINI Coupe and Roadster could have a place within the BMW lineup.

Toyota is already lending its tiny iQ to Aston Martin.
