VW to use Amarok pickup as Official Support Vehicle for Dakar Rallyby Andrew Ganz
Although the official production model has still not been shown to the public, Volkswagen announced this morning that it will supply 35 Amarok pickup trucks to be used as support vehicles for the grueling Dakar Rally in South America beginning early next year.
The Amarok, which isn't expected to be sold in North America, is VW's foray into the commercial pickup market in South and Central America. Though the production version hasn't officially been shown, Volkswagen has announced that production will commence soon at its assembly plant in Pacheco, Argentina. It will be exported to Europe and Asia.
VW says that 20 Amaroks will be used as support vehicles for the organizers and another 15 will serve as shuttle vehicles. Though they won't be used in competition, the tough terrain of the race, which runs through Chile and Argentina, will help serve as an endurance test for the Amaroks.
The Dakar Rally was moved from Africa to South America due to instability in the region that surrounds its namesake.
