Porsche: 900 buyers lined up for 918 Spyder; production likely

Shortly after its 918 Spyder concept car was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, Porsche said that it was seeking letters of intent from prospective buyers. Now, the German automaker says it has received 900 such pledges of interest and that it will move forward with a production 918 Spyder if that number crosses the 1,000 threshold.

The announcement, made by Porsche development chief Wolfgang Duerheimer, came last week at the Beijing Motor Show.

"I'm confident that we will soon reach the threshold of 1,000," he said in an interview with the media. "We need 1,000 seriously interested people to make a sound business case."

The 918 Spyder would play a small part in Porsche's plan to increase global sales to as many as 150,000 cars in the foreseeable future.

"We're very optimistic that we'll be able to further expand our leading position in the sports-car segment," Duerheimer said.
