Peugeot EX1 concept: Electric sports car

In order to illustrate that not all electric vehicles have to be city runabouts, Peugeot has taken the wraps off its EX1 electric sports car.

Ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut, Peugeot has taken the wraps off a new performance electric vehicle concept. Dubbed the Peugeot EX1, the EV concept is intended to show that not all electric cars have to be boring.

Designed with performance in mind, the EX1 employs two electric motors - one at the front axle and one at the rear. Combined power for the system 340 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, ensuring the EX1's performance is right up there with the Tesla Roadster.

In order to further prove the merits of a performance EV, Peugeot sent the EX1 to race track to break several EV records, including the standing 1/8 mile, '¼ mile, '½ mile, 1 mile, 500 meter and 1,000 meter. The EX1 never hit speeds over 87mph, but Peugeot achieved its goal, breaking the previous records set by Georg Von Opel in an electric Opel GT in 1971. The records stand for the FIA Category A - Group 8 - Class 2.

No word if Peugeot is planning a production version of the Tesla fighter, but we're sure the automaker's electric technology will eventually surface in a road-going vehicle.
