Nissan takes 20,000th Leaf reservation

Nissan has reached an early milestone for its all-electric Leaf, receiving its 20,000th order for the EV hatchback.

Nissan has taken its 20,000th Leaf reservation, putting the pure electric hatchback well ahead of expectation. Nissan didn't expect to tally its 20,000th reservation until sometime in December.

"As of today, 20,000 consumers have spoken, and they are choosing the Nissan LEAF and a zero-emission future," said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America. "We, along with our dealers, now look forward to focusing on providing an absolute top-level purchase experience to our first customers, and to help ensure that the transition to gas-free driving is a seamless one."

Due to the influx of hand raisers, Nissan has suspended the Leaf reservation process for the foreseeable future. The current reservations will take Nissan well into 2011 to fulfill, so don't expect the reservation desk to reopen until at least mid-2011.

Those that did make the list will be able to sample the Leaf on its upcoming 23-city tour.
