Chevrolet to begin Volt production next month

After debuted way back in early 2007, the Chevrolet Volt will officially begin production next month.

After what has seemed like one of the longest build ups in automotive history, General Motors has announced that the Chevrolet Volt will officially begin production at the company's Detroit-Hamtramck pant on November 10.

GM Vice Chairman of Global Operations Tom Stephens made the announcement at a Detroit-are event on Tuesday. Stephens added that the first deliveries of the $41,000 Volt will likely follow about a month after production begins.

In addition to the production news, Stephens also announced that GM will be installing 350 recharging stations at several GM facilities throughout the state of Michigan. Power companies have pledged another 5,000 charging stations for the state.

Although the production announcement is good news for GM, the Volt launch won't be without controversy. It was revealed earlier this week that the Volt's gas engine can actually power the vehicle's drive wheels under certain situations, prompting some to call the supposed EV little more than a plug-in hybrid.
