Fit for a Duchess: Kate Middleton's VW Golf hits eBay

Kate Middleton's used VW Golf is on eBay, where bidding has already topped $40,000 for a car that should be worth around $4,000!

Before she was a Duchess, Catherine of Cambridge was merely Kate Middleton of Berkshire, England, the owner of an indigo blue pearl 2001 Volkswagen Golf.

The populist image Kate and the British Royal Family cultivated could perhaps best be summed up by her Golf, a low-specification model with a 1.4-liter gas engine, a five-speed manual transmission, roll-up windows and full-face hubcaps. Such a Golf with a low 62,000 miles (for the last few years, Kate hasn't exactly been driving herself very often) would normally retail for around '£2,500 on the used car market in the United Kingdom.

But after Pope John Paul II's 1975 Ford Escort sold for nearly $700,000 back in 2005, it seems as if the sky's the limit for celebrity car sales. With five days to go on the auction, bidding has already hit '£25,100 (around $40,000). The seller, who has owned the car since 2009, hasn't disclosed the car's reserve price, so it's unclear just what it will take for this Golf to find a new owner.
