Frankfurt LIVE: Volvo Concept You [Video]by Andrew Ganz
Volvo's new You concept car heralds in a new design and engineering direction for the brand.
Volvo's new You concept car signals a different design direction for the Swedish brand and a new Scalable Platform Architecture that will underpin most of the company's lineup in the near future.
Previewing the next-generation S80, which is due out in about two years' time, the Concept You was designed by Peter Horbury.
"Concept You gives a good indication of what you can expect from our next large sedan. The blend of contemporary Scandinavian design, exquisite craftsmanship and intuitive technology will appeal to luxury car buyers all over the world," said Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of the Volvo Car Corporation.
Concept You marks a return to form for Horbury, who instilled Volvo with a new design language in the mid 1990s before moving on to Volvo's then-parent Ford. Horbury rejoined Volvo recently, but his designs haven't hinted at production-ready models until now.
All about Concept You
Volo says that Concept You is an evolution of the brand's Shanghai show car, the Concept Universe.
"This car features a more daring, coupe-like profile than the Concept Universe, while the front moves towards a more classic Volvo look," Horbury said. Volvo also had a vintage P1800 on display, although the company didn't directly connect the historical car to its Concept.
Inside, Concept You's interior is typically Swedish in that it relies on light colors and minimalist designs. Intriguingly, its rear bench features an integrated Hasselblad camera storage bin.
Underneath, Concept You rides on the automaker's new Scalable Platform Architecture. As its name suggests, this new platform will underpin nearly all of Volvo's upcoming lineup.
