Daimler, Nissan to build joint plant in Mexico?

by Mark Kleis

A rather unlikely partnership may be in the works involving two of the world's largest automakers.

Possibly adding credence to previous Leftlane reports that Nissan was mulling building a factory in Mexico, now a new report suggests Nissan is in fact considering a new plant in Mexico - with a catch.

The catch of course is that the plant would not just belong to Nissan, but also to Mercedes-Benz, according to Reuters, and would require a total investment of approximately $1 billion.

According to the report, the factory would provide capacity for up to 200,000 vehicles per year, beginning in the first half of 2014. The factory would produce both Mercedes-Benz and Nissan-branded vehicles, although it is unclear which models it would potentially produce.

This is not the first time Nissan and Daimler have come together, Renault-Nissan first formed an alliance with Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz back in April 2010 as part of an agreement to jointly develop cars and engines.

Representatives from neither automaker have denied reports surrounding the joint plant, but they refuse to acknowledge the plans either.
