Honda sells 800,000th hybrid

Honda has recorded its 800,00th hybrid sale.

It's taken Honda 12 years and 2 months, but the Japanese automaker has just completed the sale of its 800,000th hybrid vehicle. Although a notable milestone for Honda, the company is well behind Toyota's global hybrid sales of more than three-million units.

Honda didn't reveal which of its hybrid models accounted for the company's 800,000th sale, but Honda's hybrid legacy dates back to the original Insight. Honda sold its first Insight hybrid in Japan in November of 1999.

Honda followed the Insight with hybrid versions of its Civic and Accord models before launching the second-generation of its Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology. Honda released the second-generation of its Insight in 2009 and has launched six new hybrid models over the last three years.

As a result of the new-found hybrid focus, Honda's hybrid sales have grown tremendously in recent years. Honda's global hybrid sales were up 30 percent to 200,000 last year, with 500,000 of the automaker's 800,000 hybrid sales coming in the last five years.

Honda will continue its hybrid push with a gas-electric version of the Acura ILX sedan, marking the luxury brand's first-ever hybrid offering.
