Lamborghini builds 12,000th Gallardo

Lamborghini has produced 12,000 Gallardos.

It's taken Lamborghini nearly ten-years of production, but the Italian automaker has just built its 12,000th Gallardo model.

Although 12,000 units may not sound like a lot in a world that routinely sees some nameplates sell over 300,000 copies a year, the milestone represents quite an accomplishment for a high-dollar super car. In comparison, the Gallardo's bigger brother - the Murcielago - sold just 4,099 units during its ten-year production run from 2001 to 2010.

Having entered production in 2003 the current Gallardo is getting up there in age, but Lamborghini is expected to replace the car with an all-new model in the not-too-distant future. In fact, Lamborghini hinted at the new model in its Tweet announcing the birth of the 12,000th Gallardo, asking, "Ready for what comes next?"

So far no details have emerged on the Gallardo replacement, but we suspect word could be handed down sometime this year.
