Porsche 918 improves Nurburgring lap time, confirmed at 784hp

Porsche\'s 918 hybrid super car has improved its Nurburgring lap time.

Porsche's 918 hybrid super car has improved its Nurburgring lap time by a full 8 seconds. Porsche has spent the past week testing 918 prototypes at Germany's famed racing circuit.

Porsche confirmed on Wednesday that the 918 was able to lap the 13-mile track in just 7 minutes 14 seconds. That time represents a significant improvement over the 918's 7 minute 22 second lap time recorded at the Nurburgring in July.

Porsche hasn't revealed who was at the helm at the time of the record-setting lap, but the automaker did confirm that the 918 in question was fitted with an optional 'Weissach package' . What that package includes isn't exactly known, but it is believed to include upgraded brakes and weight saving measures. The 918 was riding on standard Michelin road tires.

"With a time of 7 minutes 14 seconds the 918 Spyder has confirmed the potential of its future-orientated driveline concept after just a few months of testing,” Frank Walliser, head of the 918 Spyder development, told Autocar.

That lap time is one of the fastest ever recorded by a road car and smashes the time set by the Porsche Carrera GT by 18 seconds.

Porsche also confirmed that the hybrid susper car will arrive with 784 horsepower.
