Updated BMW 5-Series to bow in Frankfurt

A new BMW 5-Series is just around the corner.

BMW has announced plans to introduce an updated version of its popular 5-Series line at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show. The new 5-Series will join the i8, Concept X5 eDrive and Concept Active Tourer Outdoor on BMW's Frankfurt stage.

BMW hasn't released any images of the new 5-Series, which will likely be tagged as a 2015 model year vehicle, but the German automaker promises "modifications to various design details, additional drive system variants and a host of innovations from BMW ConnectedDrive.”

BMW has confirmed that a new 518d model will join the 5-Series lineup as the range's new point of entry. The 518d will be available as both a sedan and wagon, but it's doubtful that the entry-level model will be sold in U.S. showrooms.

The 520d model will gain BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system as an option for 2015.

In addition to updating its 5-Series sedan and wagon, BMW will also refresh its 5-Series Gran Turismo hatchback for the new model year. More than just a mid-cycle update, BMW says the new 5-Series GT will boast a new rear end that boosts the car's cargo capacity by 2.1 cubic feet.
