BMW unveils limited-edition M5 "30 Jahre M5"

The limited-edition M5 is the most powerful street-legal car ever built by BMW\'s M division.

BMW has published a full set of details about the M5 30 Jahre M5, a limited-edition model designed to celebrate the sport sedan's 30th anniversary. "30 Jahre M5" means "30 years of the M5" in German.

Power comes from an upgraded version of the M5's twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that generates 592 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque, figures that make the limited-edition model the most powerful street-legal car ever built by BMW's M division. Linked to a Getrag-developed seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the eight-cylinder mill propels the M5 from zero to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds - nearly half a second quicker than a stock M5 - and on to a top speed of 190 mph.

Handling has been improved thanks to a standard Competition Package that adds numerous go-fast goodies like a M differential and a sport-tuned suspension.

Visually, the limited-edition M5 stands out thanks to a Frozen Dark Silver paint job as well as dark chrome trim on the radiator grille, the door handles, the fender-mounted air vents and the exhaust pipes. Model-specific 20-inch alloy wheels and bespoke badges all around wrap up the look.

Inside, the M5 packs seats upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara with "30 Jahre M5" stitched into the front seatbacks. A plaque engraved with each car's serial number is affixed to the right side of the dashboard.

All cars come standard with aluminum trim on the dashboard and an Alcantara-upholstered multi-function steering wheel, while sport seats with active bolsters, an upgraded sound system and a host of electronic driving aids are available at an extra cost.

Just 300 examples of the M5 30 Jahre M5 will be offered worldwide. Pricing information has not been published yet, but expect the sedan to command a hefty premium over the regular M5's $92,900 base price.
