Self-driving Teslas to arrive in 3-years

Tesla vehicles will be able to pilot themselves within 6-years.

Tesla Motors founder and CEO Elon Musk revealed in a recent interview that his company is developing its own autonomous vehicle technology.

Speaking with Japan's Nikkei, Musk divulged that the company's upcoming compact car, known as the Model III, will be able to partially drive itself. The Model III is scheduled to launch sometime in 2017.

Tesla will continue to develop its self-driving tech in-house thereafter, with the goal of launching a fully-autonomous vehicle by 2020.

"Full auto-pilot capability is going to happen, probably, in the five- or six-year time frame," Musk told The Nikkei.

He added: "The overall system and software will be programmed by Tesla, but we will certainly use sensors and subcomponents from many companies.”

Several other automakers, including Nissan, have also announced plans to make self-driving cars a reality by the end of the decade.
