Paris LIVE: 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63, C63 S

The Mercedes-AMG C63 S packs 503 horsepower thanks to a twin-turbo V8.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the AMG-tuned 2016 C63 and the more powerful C63 S at the Paris Motor Show. Aimed squarely at the BMW M3, the Stuttgart-based firm's upcoming sports sedans will go on sale in the coming months.

The Mercedes-AMG C63 is powered by a hand-built 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that is derived from the mill found under the hood of the AMG GT coupe. While the GT boasts 503 horsepower in its most powerful configuration, the V8 is tuned to generate 469 ponies when bolted in the C63's engine bay, enough to send the 3,780-pound sedan from zero to 60 mph in four seconds flat and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles.

Buyers after more power can opt for the C63 AMG S which packs roughly the same 503-horsepower V8 as the AMG GT. Engine aside, the S stands out from the regular C63 thanks to gloss black accents all around, S-specific multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, beefier brakes all around and an electronically locking rear differential. The C63 S can reach 60 mph from a stop in 3.9 seconds.

Looking the PartThe C63 boasts a muscular-looking front fascia accented by a twin-slat radiator grille, a bulged hood and sizable air dams with mesh inserts. The dynamic look continues past the front end with deep side skirts, while the hot-rodded C's rear fascia gains four exhaust pipes, vertical vents in the bumper and an air diffuser. The C63 sits noticeably lower than its more humble non-AMG counterpart thanks to an adjustable sport-tuned suspension setup.

Inside, the C63 packs a performance-focused cockpit with sports seats upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara, a meaty three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel and an AMG-specific instrument cluster with carbon fiber inserts. A Burmester audio system is available at an extra cost, and buyers can choose from numerous optional trim materials including aluminum and carbon fiber.

Edition 1A limited-edition model called Edition 1 will be available when the C63 hits showrooms next March. The Edition 1 will offer matte black 19-inch alloy wheels, red accents on the radiator grille and the mirrors, gray stripes and the Night Package that is available as an option on the stock C63. Inside, Edition 1 cars will get performance seats upholstered in Nappa leather, a sports steering wheel, red pepper / light aluminum trim and specific floor mats.

Pricing information will be published closer to the sedan's on-sale date. Mercedes has confirmed the C63 wagon will not be sold on these shores.

What's Next?Mercedes is preparing to expand the C-Class lineup with a convertible and a coupe. Set to debut next year, both models will get a range-topping AMG-tuned version that will undoubtedly pack the same 4.0-liter V8 as their sedan and station wagon counterparts.
