Honda Civic Type-R U.S.-bound?
A new high-performance compact is rumored to be heading our way.
It looks as though Honda's hot rodded Civic Type-R may wind up in U.S. showrooms after all. A new report out of Europe suggests Honda has given the green light to an Americanized version of its range-topping Civic model.
Rumored for years, a Civic Type-R could finally become a reality for U.S. buyers in about a year's time. According to MotoryRacing, Honda has decided to market the next-generation Civic Type-R in the United States.
Although our Civic Type-R will be related to the version sold in Europe and elsewhere, it won't be the exact same car. The Euro-spec Civic Type-R will be based on a hatchback body style while our model will likely be based on the Civic coupe and sedan.
Underhood, however, will be a different story with both versions of the Civic Type-R set to share a singular engine — a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder tuned to develop 280 horsepower. That should give the Civic Type-R enough pep to compete with vehicles like the Ford Focus ST and Subaru WRX.
Pricing information is unknown at this time, but we expect the Civic Type-R to carry a base price in the mid-to-upper $20,000 range. Honda has plenty of time to figure out pricing though as the Civic Type-R isn't scheduled to arrive on these shores until sometime in 2016.
