Dodge Ram trucks recalled for loose fastener

Potential flaw could cause rear axle to detach or lock up.

FCA is recalling nearly 300,000 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups due to the potential for the pinion nut on the rear axle to loosen. If this happens, the rear axle may lock up or detach with little or no warning, potentially resulting in loss of control of the truck.

FCA says it is aware of three incidents related to this defect, including one which involved injuries. According to Reuters, two consumers reported uncontrollable spins following rear axle failure, and all of the incidents occurred while the trucks were traveling faster than 50 mph.

FCA says the proper remedy for the issue is the installation of a retention feature to keep the nut in place.

This recall covers 287,945 model year 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups, however this is not the first time FCA has faced this particular problem. A recall was undertaken in early 2013 to address an almost identical issue on a wide range of newer (2009-2012) trucks and SUVs.
