NY LIVE: 2016 Mercedes-AMG G65
The G65 is positioned at the very top of the G-Class lineup.
Mercedes' newly-formed Mercedes-AMG division has lifted the veil off of the 2016 G65 at the New York Motor Show.
Positioned at the very top of the G-Class lineup, the G65 has been on sale in a number of global markets including Germany, Russia and the United Arab Emirates since 2012 but it has never officially been offered in the United States.
Mercedes' ultimate off-roader is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine that makes 621 horsepower and a massive 738 lb-ft. of torque. Bolted to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the twelve-cylinder sends the behemoth from zero to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, a statistic that is downright impressive considering the G65 reportedly tips the scale at nearly 6,000 pounds. Top speed is electronically limited to 143 mph.
Engine aside, the G65 stands out from lesser G-Class models thanks to new ten-spoke alloy wheels, "V12 Biturbo" emblems on the front fenders and slightly revised bumpers on both ends.
A full set of details about the 2016 Mercedes-AMG G65 will be published when it goes on sale next November. Buyers looking to add the ultimate G-Wagen to their car collection should start saving up now because it will carry an astronomically high base price of $217,900 before a mandatory $925 destination charge is factored in.
Like every member of the G-Class family built since 1979, the G65 will be hand-assembled by Magna-Steyr in Graz, Austria.
