Lexus teases Shanghai-bound 2016 ES

The ES will get a sharper design influenced by the NX and the RX.

Toyota's Lexus division has published a dark teaser image that previews the facelifted 2016 ES. The sedan is scheduled to greet the public for the first time in a little over a week at this year's edition of the biennial Shanghai Motor Show.

The teaser suggests that the three-year old sixth-gen ES will benefit from a sharper, more modern-looking design. As expected, the front end will borrow styling cues such as more angular headlights, boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights and a bolder rendition of the automaker's ubiquitous spindle grille from recent additions to the Lexus lineup including the IS, the NX and the recently-introduced RX.

Lexus has not revealed if the facelift will be accompanied by mechanical updates, though we suspect the ES will get the NX's 235-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four. Currently, the ES is only available with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. of torque and a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain that uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder mill and a small electric motor to generate a total of 200 horsepower.

Lexus will fully unveil the next ES online in the next few days, and the sedan will make its official debut in Shanghai, China, on April 20th. Stay tuned, we'll be on location to bring you live images of the 2016 LExus ES as soon as it is introduced.
