BMW brand posts best March ever

Automaker leads German rivals so far in 2015.

BMW announced Tuesday that March, 2015 was its best ever, with 195,593 vehicles sold worldwide.

BMW's March sales, excluding the MINI sub-brand, were sufficient to put it in the lead over German rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz for 2015. The tally so far for the year stands at 451,576 vehicles for BMW, 438,250 for Audi and 429,602 for Mercedes-Benz.

According to the AP (via CNBC), BMW credits its X-line of crossovers and SUVs for its strong overall performance. The X5 SUV was up 12% in March alone and it, along with other models produced there, pushed BMW's Spartanburg, SC assembly plant past a major milestone--the production of its three-millionth vehicle, a Donington Grey Metallic X5 M with Mugello Red leather seats and carbon-fiber interior trim.

The plant produced its first vehicle, an Alpine White 318i, back in 1994. The one-millionth title went to an Interlagos Blue Z4 M in 2006, and the two-millionth vehicle was a Vermillion Red X3.
