Shanghai LIVE: 2016 Volvo XC90 Excellence
The XC90 Excellence is the most luxurious car that Volvo has ever built.
Volvo has traveled to the Shanghai Motor Show to introduce a more upscale version of the XC90 appropriately dubbed Excellence.
Billed as the most luxurious Volvo ever built in the company's 88-year history, the Excellence flagship offers space for four passengers on individual seats. The rear seats are mounted further back in the cabin than in a stock XC90, a setup that allowed engineers to free up additional leg room without having to stretch the XC90's wheelbase.
The Excellence was unabashedly designed around the rear passengers. The back part of the cabin is fitted with reclining, heated and ventilated rear seats that offer a massage function, and each passenger can enjoy his or her own entertainment thanks to a pair of retractable touch screens integrated into the front seatbacks.
The list of standard creature comforts includes airplane-style folding tablets, footrests, a mini fridge with bottle and glass holders built into the center console and heating/cooling cup holders.
An extra layer of sound insulation and Pirelli Noise Canceling System tires let the occupants enjoy the 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system. To top it all off, every XC90 Excellence comes with a set of crystal glasses hand-made by a Swedish glass design company named Orrefors.
The XC90 Excellence can be ordered with Volvo's gasoline-electric Twin Engine plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The setup pairs a 316-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged with a 60-horsepower electric motor located over the rear axle and a smaller motor wedged between the engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2016 Volvo XC90 Excellence will go on sale in select markets later this year, though more precise details have not been published yet. In select markets, buyers will be able to build and purchase the Excellence online.
