VW shows off Car-Net app for Apple Watch
Platform allows owners to monitor vehicle vitals, access features remotely.
Volkswagen announced Tuesday that it is adding Apple Watch support for its Car-Net app platform, giving owners increased access to vehicle maintenance and monitoring functions.
"These high-tech features, available through the Car-Net app for Apple Watch, are paving the way to Volkswagen's future of connected vehicles," said Abdallah Shanti, Executive Vice President and Group Chief Information Officer for Region Americas, in the announcement. "As a part of Volkswagen's Digital Vehicle Management Platform, this was a truly collaborative effort between our Technical Development and Group IT teams."
Features that will port over to the Apple Watch include remote locking, fuel level monitoring and remote charging (for e-Golf models only). Car-Net offers other convenience features, such as the ability to locate and provide directions the owner's car and remotely honk the horn to help locate it in a crowded lot or garage.
VW Car-Net is available on 2014+ Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan models and standard on all 2015+ Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf SportWagen and e-Golf models.
A release date for the Watch-enabled app was not included in the announcement.
