Spied: Alfa Romeo's upcoming SUV
Alfa\'s SUV is starting to take shape.
This may look like a disfigured Fiat 500L, but beneath that rough exterior resides Alfa Romeo's upcoming sport utility vehicle.
Still in the mule engineering phase, Alfa's SUV is currently being tested with the body of a Fiat 500L. However, it's clear that the Alfa Romeo SUV will be significantly longer than its 500L body donor.
Based on Alfa's new Giorgio architecture, the Alfa SUV will boast standard rear-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive will be offered. The SUV's base powerplant should be a turbocharged four-cylinder, with a turbo six hailing as the line's top offering.
When it goes on sale in late 2016 or early 2017, the Alfa Romeo SUV will compete with vehicles like the BMW X3, Porsche Macan and Audi Q5. Given that level of competition, expect a luxurious cabin with plenty of amenities.
The SUV will be Alfa's second volume model for the United States, following the Giorgio-based sedan that's slated to unveiled this year and launched in 2016. The sedan will be available with a high-performance V6 cranking out up to 520 horsepower, but it remains unknown if that mill will find its way beneath the hood of the SUV.
