Ford highlights F-150's trailer backup assist tech
The system allows the driver to steer via a control knob rather than moving the steering wheel.
Ford has highlighted the new Pro Trailer Backup Assist technology available for the 2016 F-150 pickup.
The system allows the driver to watch the backup camera and steer the vehicle via a dedicated control knob on the center stack, without manually operating the steering wheel.
Rotating the knob further in either direction changes the turning radius, while vehicle speed is automatically limited over certain road surfaces to help keep the maneuvers under control.
"Pro Trailer Backup Assist is a smart solution to save time and increase productivity for our customers," said Ford Truck Group marketing manager Doug Scott. "Instead of struggling to back up their trailer, they can spend more time on the job or enjoying the lake."
The system takes advantage of existing driver-assistance technologies such as Curve Control stability intervention, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and collision-warning with brake support.
The feature will be an available option for all F-150 trim levels, though the company has not yet announced pricing details.
