Feds investigating Ford Edge over wheel failure
The Edge Sport\'s 22-inch wheels are under investigation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new investigation involving the 2014 Ford Edge Sport after receiving a report that the 22-inch rims used on the SUV could have a tendency to fracture.
The probe was sparked by a November complaint that a 2014 Edge Sport with just 8,500 miles on the odometer suffered from a sudden and unexpected wheel failure. According to the NHTSA's recount of the incident, the "right-front corner of the vehicle suddenly dropped while driving, causing the vehicle to drive off the road and into a field. The right-front wheel rim was found to have broken into two pieces. The owner said that there was no prior warning or wheel related problems with the vehicle.” The driver didn't report hitting a pothole or any other road debris before the wheel failure.
No injuries were caused by the accident.
According to The Detroit News, the probe covers about 20,000 vehicles. Ford declined to comment on the matter but is believed to be cooperating with the NHTSA. It's possible that the investigation could eventually lead to a recall campaign.
