2017 Volvo XC90 gets tech updates, new Excellence model

Volvo is already updating its XC90 utility vehicle.

Volvo has announced a few tweaks for its flagship XC90 crossover for the 2017 model year. The 2017 model year will also see the United States introduction of the super luxurious XC90 Excellence.

Following in the footsteps of the recently unveiled S90 sedan and V90 wagon, the 2017 XC90 will come equipped with the latest version of Volvo's semi-autonomous tech. Known as Pilot Assist II, the updated system allows the 2017 XC90 to accelerate, steer and brake itself at speeds up to 80mph. The system in the 2016 XC90 was capped at a less useful 30mph.

The XC90's City Safety system is also getting an update that includes run-off road mitigation. As its name implies, the new function automatically steers the vehicle back into its lane if it senses the driver is veering too far off to the side. The latest version of City Safety update also includes Large Animal Detection.

A few more apps are also in store for the 2017 XC90, including music app Spotify and parking app Park and Pay. A new Connect Service Booking app is intended to make scheduling a service appointment a little easier. A new Record & Send feature for the XC90's Sensus infotainment system can record a voice message and then send it to the driver as a reminder.

Volvo has not announced if any of the updates for the 2017 XC90 will migrate to the 2016 version of the SUV.

In addition to those changes for the new model year, Volvo has confirmed that the luxurious XC90 Excellence (pictured) will be joining the company's U.S. lineup for 2017. Unveiled last year in China, the XC90 Excellence offers seating for four, with an emphasis on back seat comfort. To that end rear seat passengers are treated to heated and cool seats with a massaging function, integrated refrigerator and folding airline-style tables. The XC90 Excellence is available exclusively with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain boasting 400 horsepower.

Pricing information hasn't been announced, but expect the XC90 Excellence to cost a fair bit more than the $68,100 Volvo charges for the regular XC90 plug-in. The 2017 Volvo XC90 Excellence will go on sale this summer.
