Next Ford Mustang to arrive two years early: Report
A new Mustang could be here sooner than first thought.
A leaked document indicates Ford will bump up the start of production of its next-generation Mustang sports car by almost two full years.
When Ford launched its latest Mustang for the 2015 model year, it wasn't planning on releasing the next-generation of the pony car until January 2022. However, the latest Chevrolet Camaro is proving to be a worthy adversary, prompting Ford to shift the start of production of its next Mustang — codenamed S650 — to May 2020.
"Program code for the next?generation Mustang (S550(ng)) has been changed to S650 and the SOP has been shifted back from January 2022 to May 2020. Subsequently, the EOP for the S550 has been moved to April 2020,” the document obtained by Mustang6G read.
The rushed rehash is somewhat of a surprise considering the Mustang's healthy sales. Through the first two months of the year Mustang sales are up 2.5 percent to 17,573 units, keeping well ahead of the Camaro and its 11,702 sales so far in 2016. However, the Camaro is widely considered a better driving car than the Mustang, and Chevrolet has several new versions of its muscle car waiting in the wings, including a more efficient four-cylinder model, a performance-minded 1LE package and a soft top convertible. Once those models land, the Mustang could have more of a dog fight on its hands.
