2017 Ford Fusion receives Top Safety Pick Plus status [Video]
Small-overlap performance has jumped from \'acceptable\' to \'good,\' while Ford\'s automatic emergency braking system improved to a \'superior\' rating.
Ford's redesigned Fusion sedan has has received Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The previous generation had received an 'acceptable' rating in the small-overlap test. Intrusion reached six inches and the dummy's head "barely contacted the front airbag" before sliding off.
Engineers succeeded in revamping the front end to better handle the small-overlap impact. The 2017 model experienced intrusion of just two inches, while the airbags and safety belt worked well to control dummy movement.
Ford's automatic emergency braking system also received a better rating for the 2017 model year. It now carries a 'superior' designation, completely avoiding collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph.
Other midsize sedans to earn a 2016 Top Safety Pick+ award include the 2016 Honda Accord, Mazda6, Subaru Legacy, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Nissan Maxima, Chrysler 200 Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, Toyota Prius v, Volkswagen Passat, and the VW Jetta.
