Elon Musk shows off 125-mph car sled prototype
Cars would sit on sleds rocketed to 125 mph in underground tunnels.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that Tesla CEO and Tony Stark spirit animal Elon Musk unveiled a bonkers concept video outlining his plan for a 30-layer network of traffic tunnels beneath Los Angeles. Now, Musk has released a video on Instagram showing a working prototype.
"This is a test run of our electric sled that would transport cars at 125 mph (200 km/h) through the tunnels, automatically switching from one tunnel to the next," Musk posted in the video description. He also added the disclaimer, "Warning, this may cause motion sickness or seizures."
What follows is a video shot from the point of view of one of the sleds as it picks up speed and rockets down a long tunnel. It looks like something straight out of Space Mountain.
"Would mean Westwood to LAX in 5 mins," Musk says. That trip, though only 10 miles, can take up to 90 minutes depending on how bad traffic is on LA's I-405.
It's still not clear when and if this tunnel could be built, or who would have access to these sleds and how many cars the network would truly be able to accommodate. If it comes to fruition, though, it could save Angelenos a lot of time.
