Hyundai i30 N gains more power, 155 mph top speed

Hyundai test drivers accumulated more than 6,200 miles on the Nurburgring to develop the brand\'s first N model.

Hyundai has officially unveiled the i30 N, inaugurating the Korean automaker's new "born in Namyang, honed at Nürburgring" sub-brand.

Engineers have revised the i30's 2.0-liter T-GDI turbocharged engine to deliver up to 275 PS (271 horsepower) and 260 pound-feet of torque, tuned for responsiveness and linear output through the power band.

A six-speed manual gearbox boasts rev-matching with different modes for smooth or fast gear transitions, while an electronic limited-slip differential and launch control help maximize power delivery to the road.

An electronic exhaust valve can be actuated for a heightened aural experience. Hyundai says drivers will also hear an "after-fire" sound in Sport+ mode. The road-going hatchback presumably lacks a genuine anti-lag system that creates the pops and crackles in a WRC car, so the effect is likely piped through the speakers instead.

Hyundai test drivers accumulated more than 6,200 miles on the Nurburgring to refine the chassis and suspension systems, which benefit from active dampers and a lower ride height. Brakes and steering have also been upgraded from the standard i30.

Designers worked to make the i30 N look the part, lowering the ride height and revising its bumper, grille and lights. A front splitter and rear spoiler are said to provide tangible increases in downforce and aerodynamics.

The i30 N will arrive in Europe by the end of the year to take on the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Focus ST and other performance hatchbacks. Hyundai has not signaled any intention to bring the i30 lineup to the US.
