Spied: Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder

Porsche\'s summer special caught outside its element.

The Arctic Circle may not be where you'd expect to catch a car in its bikini top, but even Porsche's baby beach buggy isn't spared from the requisite cold-weather testing. Behold, then, the new Boxster 718 Spyder, shown here with essentially no camouflage.

Thanks to the minimal disguise, the Spyder's stretched cloth roof is on full display here, stretched over the roadster's signature double-bulge rear deck. The base Boxster's integrated rear deck spoiler carries over, as does the rear bumper (for now, at least).

We say "for now" because some elements appear unfinished, such as the rear valence and exhaust outlets, seen here wearing more soot than polish. It also eschews the base model's center-outlet exhaust configuration for a more outwardly mounted configuration.

If rumors are to be believed, the 718 Spyder variant will ship with a flat-six motor, complementing the same offering in the 718 Cayman GT4. Manual and PDK transmissions are both expected, and if the previous-generation car is anything to go by, base power output should be similar to that of the 991.2 Carrera S.

We've seen this look on 718 Cayman GT4 mules, which seems to cement the theory that it's a signature for flat-six models (base, S and GTS models all sport the center-outlet look).

Despite the missing details, we expect the 718 Spyder will show its production face sooner rather than later. Stay tuned.
