Geneva LIVE: Abarth 124 GT

The 124 GT is a carbon fiber-topped version of Abarth\'s roadster.

Fiat's Abarth performance division traveled to the Geneva Motor Show to show off a special edition of its 124 Spider.

Known as the Abarth 124 GT, the special edition roadster is largely the same as the Abarth 124 Spider available in Fiat dealerships today, but there is one key difference — the GT comes with a light-weight removable hardtop made from carbon fiber. Abarth says the 124 GT is the first-ever convertible to be offered with a factory hardtop made out of carbon fiber.

According to Abarth, the carbon fiber roof, which contains a rear window with defroster, weighs just 16 kilograms (35 pounds). But more than just a way to protect occupants from the outside elements, Abarth says the hardtop actually increases the 124's torsional rigidity.

Other unique features of the Abarth 124 GT include light-weight 17-inch OZ alloy wheels, Alpi Orientali Grey paint and mirror caps and rear spoiler finished in gunmetal. Buyers can also opt to have the latter two items finished in carbon fiber.

Under hood the Abarth 124 GT uses a 170 horsepower 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The 124 GT can be optioned either with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Abarth has not announced pricing for the 124 GT, but expect a premium over the standard version of the car. Abarth also hasn't signaled if it will offer the 124 GT in the United States.
