Geneva LIVE: Polestar 1 debuts with 600-hp hybrid powertrain

The 2+2 Grand Tourer Coupe will represent a halo car for Volvo Car Group\'s standalone performance marque.

Volvo Car Group has revealed the first model in the newly-formed Polestar brand, now a standalone marque dedicated to high-performance electrified vehicles.

Known as the Polestar 1, the halo car is a two-door 2+2 Grand Tourer Coupe with a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of delivering 600 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

The company promises all-electric range will reach around 93 miles, claimed to be the longest of any hybrid car on the market.

The Polestar 1 will be built on Volvo's Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) platform, though half of the components are said to have been created from the ground up by Polestar's engineers. It is said to be the first car to employ Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension (CESi), while a dual electric rear axle enables precise control over torque application at each wheel.

The coupe is clad in a carbon fiber body that increases torsional stiffness by 45 percent while reducing weight and lowering the overall center of gravity.

Polestar cars will be sold exclusively online and offered on a two- to three-year susbcription basis, an all-inclusive package that includes pick-up and delivery servicing and rental options for other vehicles within the Volvo Car Group range.

Production of the Polestar 1 will start by mid-2019, followed by the Polestar 2 full battery-electric vehicle later that same year.
