Geneva LIVE: 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63

The all-new G-Class gets some AMG love.

Just a few weeks ago, we got our first good look at the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (the "Geländewagen"). Now, we're seeing its first AMG variant. Feast your eyes on the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. While electrification is expected to creep into the G-Class sooner or later (likely spawning a "baby" AMG variant), for now the G63 represents the floor for G-Class AMG models.

And that's a high "floor," considering the base G550 is already powered by a biturbo, 4.0L V8 making 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. At the same time, the G63 can't represent the be-all, end-all; that's where the forthcoming G65 will slot in.

That said, the G63 packs an upgraded version of the G550's biturbo V8 pushing 577 horsepower and a thoroughly respectable 627lb-ft of torque. Mercedes claims this will propel the G63 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds--V8 pony car territory despite its significantly greater heft.

Like the G550, the G63 benefits from an all-new architecture that results in more than 350 pounds of weight loss compared to the outgoing car. The G63 is equipped with rear-biased 4Matic all-wheel-drive, a nine-speed automatic transmission and--also mirroring the base model--locking front, center and rear differentials.

As with all AMG models, the adaptive suspension and transmission of the G63 receive special treatment for extra performance. And while the G63 remains incredibly capable off-road, its asphalt mannerisms received special attention. An available AMG Driver's package (presumably equipped with higher-performance rubber) even bumps the G63's top speed from 137 to 149 miles per hour.

Outside, the AMG treatment is fairly subtle. The wheel arches have been flared a little more extravagantly and the grille is blacked-out for a more sinister look. AMG badging adorns the brake calipers and rear end, and AMG-specific wheels have been fitted (with other accessory alloys likely available for those buyers who wish to customize).

The new G63's interior benefits from the G550's upgrades as well, with S-Class-sourced COMAND infotainment and cluster screens available (though old-school dial-and-tube is standard). An AMG-specific steering wheel is fitted, and the grab-handle on the passenger's side is adorned in carbon fiber.
