Toyota, Subaru recall 400K vehicles to fix defective valve springs

The campaign affects the Subaru Forester, Impreza and BRZ.

An engine defect has prompted a global recall for over 400,000 vehicles sold by Subaru and Toyota.

The issue involves weak valve springs that can fracture and prevent the valves from closing properly. Failure can cause stalling and extensive engine damage.

The faulty engines were used in many Subaru models including the Forester, Impreza and BRZ. Toyota is consequently recalling its BRZ twin, the Scion FR-S.

Affected vehicles were manufactured from early 2012 through late 2013.
