Ford recalls F-150; surprise downshift blamed for 'whiplash' injury

Nearly 1.5 million trucks are affected in North America.

Ford has launched three recalls for vehicles sold in the US market including the 2011-2013 F-150, 2017-2019 Lincoln Continental, and the 2019 Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus and Navigator.

The F-150 recall affects nearly 1.5 million vehicles equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. An electrical issue can cause the gearbox to unexpectedly shift into first gear, even at high speeds.

"Ford is aware of five reports of accidents, including one report of 'whiplash' potentially related to this condition," the company says.

The glitch will be addressed via a software update that presumably prevents the transmission from shifting into first gear if the electrical fault occurs.

The Lincoln Continental recall focuses on door latches that may not properly engage, while the Mustang, Nautilus and Navigator are being brought in for service to reprogram the instrument cluster software.
