IIHS praises Ford F-150, Nissan Titan in passenger small-overlap crash [Video]

The Toyota Tundra and Nissan Frontier are 'still struggling' with the driver-side small overlap test.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has highlighted the Nissan Titan and Ford F-150 in its latest round of tests focusing on the passenger-side small-overlap crash scenario.

The pickup duo earned a 'good' rating in the passenger-side test, which was introduced in 2017 to verify that automakers were applying reinforcements to both sides of the front end -- not just the driver side.

Notably, the Honda Ridgeline is the only pickup to qualify for 2019 Top Safety Pick honors despite receiving a lower 'acceptable' mark in the passenger-side crash. The Ram 1500 also carries over a 'good' rating from previous tests for vehicles built after July 2018.

"We commend Ford, Nissan and Ram for providing state-of-the-art crash protection for both drivers and front passengers of their large pickup models," says IIHS research chief David Zuby. "As a group, however, the pickup class still has a lot of work to do."

The Toyota Tundra is the only pickup to receive a 'poor' rating, while five trucks were deemed 'marginal.'
