Boring Co's Baltimore-DC project passes environmental review

The report is now open for public review and comment.

Boring Company's DC-to-Baltimore loop project has passed an environmental review, overcoming the first significant piece of bureaucratic red tape.

The proposed dig consists of twin underground tunnels stretching approximately 35 miles, partially following a government right-of-way beneath the Baltimore Washington Parkway. Terminals would be located at New York Avenue northwest of Union Station in Washington DC and in the Camden Yards area of downtown Baltimore.

"The publication of a draft environmental assessment for this unique project demonstrates the Department's commitment to preparing for the future of transportation across all modes," said US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

The Environmental Assessment is designed to determine whether the project would have significant environmental impacts. Publishing the assessment opens the findings to public review and comment on environmental considerations.

"Final governmental approvals will depend on the outcome of the review and comment process and any subsequent modifications," the DoT wrote in a statement.

Both the federal and state Departments of Transportation note that operational safety issues and engineering/design details will be addressed in future studies.
