One Hot Lap of the 2019 New York auto show [Video]

Here are all the highlights of this year's NYIAS.

The curtain has officially closed on the 2019 New York International Auto Show, concluding the final act of the 2018-2019 auto show season.

This year's New York show was a bit short on exciting, big-name reveals -- it didn't have LA's Jeep Gladiator or Detroit's Toyota Supra -- but there were some important debuts in the Big Apple. So without further ado, let's get to them.

2020 Toyota Highlander

The three-row SUV segment is quickly becoming one of the hottest in the industry, and Toyota is responding to that boost in popularity with an all-new version of its Highlander for the 2020 model year.

Although all-new, the Highlander retains exterior styling reminiscent of the model on sale today. However, Toyota has given the 2020 Highlander a more modern look with softer edges and a pronounced character line down the sides of the vehicle.

Inside the Highlander gets a new infotainment system that runs both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the line and includes adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.

Buyers will be able to choose between a 293 horsepower V6 and a hybrid model churning out a respectable 240 horsepower. Toyota expects the Highlander Hybrid to return an impressive 34mpg in mixed driving.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander is scheduled to go on sale in December.

2020 Lincoln Corsair

Lincoln traveled to the 2019 NY auto show to introduce its MKC-replacing Corsair small SUV. Although its name has changed, the Corsair is still based on the Ford Escape.

Along with a different name, Lincoln has also graced the Corsair with new exterior styling that matches that of the Navigator and Aviator. The result is a handsome little ute that looks far more upscale that before.

Likewise, the Corsair has a more premium feeling interior than its MKC forebear; Lincoln did an excellent job of keeping the Corsair's Escape bones behind the scenes.

Power comes courtesy of two four-cylinder, turbocharged engines -- a 2.0L with 250 horsepower and a 2.3L with 280 horsepower. An eight-speed auto and front-wheel drive come as standard with both engines. All-wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade.

Look for the 2020 Corsair to arrive in Lincoln showrooms this fall.

2020 Cadillac CT5

Cadillac used the 2019 New York auto show to introduce the world to its all-new CT5 sedan. For those struggling to keep up with Cadillac's new naming system, the CT5 serves as the replacement for the CTS.

The CT5 adopts Cadillac's latest design language, which seems to work better on the brand's sedans than it does on its SUVs. Overall the CT5 is a sharp looking vehicle, if a bit bland.

The CT5's powertrains also don't elicit much excitement. The standard motor is a four-cylinder and the optional 3.0L V6 has a somewhat conservative rating of 335 horsepower. A pair of turbochargers at least crank torque to 400 lb-ft.

Cadillac promises its Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system is coming to the CT5, but that won't happen until next year at the earliest.

Genesis Mint concept

Hyundai's Genesis luxury brand desperately needs an SUV, so naturally the brand unveiled a small car concept in New York.

Called Mint, the show car is a small two-door with seating for two. Genesis didn't detail the car's powertrain, other than to note it's electric with 200 miles of range.

We don't exactly know what the Mint foretells, but it could signal Genesis' intentions to launch a small city car in the coming years.

2020 Nissan GT-R, 370Z 50th Anniversary models

50 years is a major milestone for any vehicle nameplate, let alone two, but Nissan went rather conservative for the half-century celebration of its GT-R and Z sports cars.

For its 50th birthday Nissan gifted the GT-R, one of the most storied nameplates in all of cardom, with a special paint package. The 370Z didn't make out any better, with its 50th anniversary package consisting of little more than some stickers.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS

At long last Mercedes replaced its long-in-the-tooth GLS three-row SUV with an all-new model at the 2019 New York auto show.

The 2020 GLS features all-new exterior styling and an interior befitting of its position as the S-Class of SUVs. Mercedes also updated the GLS' powertrains, which now include six- and eight-cylinder engines with standard mild hybrid tech.

The 2020 GLS will arrive later this year to compete with BMW's new X7.

2020 Hyundai Venue

Hyundai's new 2020 Venue small SUV was the surprise hit of the 2019 New York show. The Venue has funky exterior styling that reminds us of the Volvo XC40, and we loved the blue cloth interior that was on display in the Big Apple.

Power comes from a 1.6L turbo four, and buyers will have the choice of a six-speed manual or CVT. Fuel economy is excellent at 33mpg combined.

Hyundai says the 2020 Venue will go on sale during the fourth quarter of this year.

2020 Hyundai Sonata

Say what you will about the new Sonata's styling, but there's no denying Hyundai's mid-size sedan will stand out from the pack.

A key styling cue of the new Sonata is an LED headlight element that follows the sedan's hood line, giving it a distinct look from any distance. The rest of the Sonata's body is sharp, too, with the kind of sculpted lines that are typically reserved for luxury vehicles.

Sedan sales are on the decline, but the 2020 Sonata should draw plenty of attention in a sea of similar-looking SUVs.

2020 Subaru Outback

Subaru followed up the February debut of the 2020 Legacy sedan with a new version of its Outback wagon for 2020.

Subaru's popular high-riding wagon gets new looks for the new model year, but changes are subtle from any vantage point. What's not subtle is the Outback's interior, which now features better materials and a tablet-sized infotainment screen.

Power for the base Outback is provided by a 2.5L four-cylinder making 182 horsepower, but enthusiast will be happy to see the return of the XT model, complete with turbo power. The Outback XT uses the same basic 2.4L turbo-four as the Ascent SUV, which develops 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque.

Pricing information will be released closer to the 2020 Outback's fall market launch.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS

Kia is keeping its Stinger performance sedan fresh for the 2020 model year with a new GTS trim.

The Stinger GTS is hard to miss thanks to its Federation orange paint job. The GTS model also receives unique carbon fiber exterior trim.

Kia has also retuned the Stinger GTS' powertrain, which now includes a limited slip rear differential on all-wheel drive models and a dedicated drift mode.

Kia will produce just 800 units of the 2020 Stinger GTS.

Kia HabaNiro

The Kia HabaNiro is a spicy little city car that could eventually make it into the company's production car line. The HabaNiro is all-electric, of course, features level 5 autonomous drive capabilities and a red interior that would make any chili pepper blush.

2019 Porsche 911 Speedster

The 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster is one last love letter to the outgoing 991-generation 911 sports car.

As its name implies, the 911 Speedster is an open air vehicle with a cut down windshield. The whole speedster look is enhanced by a two-tone paint job and a smattering of number dots.

The Speedster is powered by a 4.0L flat-six that develops 502 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. The Speedster is available exclusively with a manual transmission.

Prices for the Speedster start at a steep $275,000, but even at that price we doubt Porsche will have any trouble selling them out.

Acura TLX PMC Edition

Acura didn't unveil a new TLX at the New York auto show, but rather a new way to build the TLX.

The PMC Edition model is hand built at the same Ohio factory that makes the NSX supercar. And to really drive that point home, the TLX PMC wears the same Valencia Red Pearl paint that was once exclusive to the NSX.

The PMC treatment also includes special badging and a blending of the TLX's formerly separate A Spec and Advanced packages. The premium for the PMC model is about $3,000 compared to a loaded version of the standard TLX.

2020 Mazda CX-5 Diesel

After one of the lengthiest build ups in automotive history, Mazda finally unveiled its diesel-powered CX-5 small SUV at the 2019 NYIAS.

Unfortunately, the CX-5 Diesel doesn't appear to be worth the wait. Not only does it cost $42,000, but it also returns disappointing fuel economy. With a rating of 27mpg city and 30mpg highway, the CX-5 Diesel is actually less efficient than a gas-powered Honda CR-V.

Volkswagen Tarok concept

VW continued to dangle the idea of a small pickup for the U.S. market at this year's New York show with the Tarok concept. The Tarok is sensibly based on VW's MQB architecture, but VW says it still doesn't have any plans to enter the competitive truck segment.
