Rivian shows R1T performing 360-degree 'Tank Turn' spin
The feature will be available on the R1T pickup and R1S SUV.
Rivian has posted an official video showing its R1T all-electric pickup performing a unique 'Tank Turn' spin.
Spinning the the driver- and passenger-side wheels in opposite directions allows the truck to rotate in place, mimicking the 360-degree spin maneuver of a military tank.
An earlier video showing the R1T Tank Turn had attracted attention but was later pulled from YouTube after viewers pointed out that it was likely a computer-generated clip rather than an actual demonstration.
Rivian says the feature will be available on both the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, both of which share the same electric 'skateboard' platform architecture that integrates four electric motors necessary to spin the wheels on each axle in different directions. The Tank Turn is consequently highlighted as a capability unique to Rivian's models versus dual- and tri-motor all-wheel-drive technology employed by Tesla and others.
The company has received billions of dollars in funding, including $500 million via a partnership with Ford, to help bring the EVs to market.
