Spied: Audi e-tron Quattro Sportback

The Sportback will be an electric take on the SUV coupe.

Audi is looking to quickly follow up its all electric e-tron SUV with a sportier version of the plug-in utility vehicle. A prototype for Audi's sleek-roofed e-tron Sportback was spotted testing earlier today near the Arctic Circle.

The concept of a coupe-like SUV isn't anything new, but the Audi e-tron Sportback will be among the first to bring the aesthetic to the EV segment. Like the current crop of gas-powered coupe SUVs, the Sportback will be based on the standard e-tron SUV, with the main difference being its roofline. Pretty much everything else -- including drivetrain -- is expected to be lifted straight from the e-tron.

That means the e-tron Sportback should be powered by a couple of electric motors developing around 400 horsepower. The normal e-tron can go from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and cover about 250 miles per charge, so expect similar figures from the Sportback.

Given the general rush to get EVs to market, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Audi e-tron Sportback make its official debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Look for sales to start in late 2019 or early 2020.
