Audi A8 to get 'prestigious' derivative; next-gen might go all-electric
Previous rumors suggest the company could revive the historic Horch name for its Maybach rival.
Audi has announced plans to launch an ultra-luxurious A8 variant in the near term, while the A8's long-term fate could be all-electric.
At its annual General Meeting, the company noted that the A8 family will be expanded to include a new "especially luxurious and prestigious derivative."
The automaker has not divulged any more official details, though the limited information meshes with a rumor claiming the historic Horch name will be revived for a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class rival.
Expected to arrive in 2021 or 2021, the Horch-badged A8 would presumably feature unique exterior elements and a posh interior that steps above the current sedan's trim packages. A W12 engine is likely, perhaps with a powerful V8 as an alternative option.
Looking down the road, Audi says the next-generation A8 "might well be all-electric," pending a final decision.
"That has not been decided yet, but I can well imagine it," said chairman Bram Schot. "We are thinking about revolutionizing the top-end class with a completely new concept for the A8."
