Audi mulls 'more extreme' rear-wheel-drive R8

The flagship variant would be inspired by the R8 LMS GT3 race car.

Audi is apparently considering a higher-performance R8 variant inspired by the R8 LMS GT3 race car.

Speaking to PistonHeads, Audi Sport head Oliver Hoffman confirmed that the rear-wheel-drive R8 AWS has been a strong seller and the company is now looking to build a more direct rival to Porsche's GT cars and AMG's Black Series lineup.

"We have some good ideas for a more extreme R8 as we know the powerful exterior design of our racing car is amazing - people want to drive this on the street," he said.

The new variant would likely keep its naturally aspirated V10 which currently tops out at 620 horsepower. A GT3-inspired street car would presumably benefit from significant weight savings and track-focused aerodynamic enhancements.

The company has not yet confirmed if the proposed R8 flagship has been approved for production or when it might arrive on the market.
