Audi predicts self-driving cars by 2020

Audi says self-driving cars will be here by the end of the decade.

Self-driving vehicles could be reality by the end of the decade, Audi's chief executive said on Wednesday at the Handelsblatt Annual Conference in Munich.

"We are assuming that a series-built vehicle with a piloted driving function will be technically feasible this decade,” Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said.

Stadler's remarks come just weeks after Audi unveiled its latest autonomous vehicle technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The cars displayed at CES had the ability to take over driving duties at speeds less than 37mph and could also self-park without a driver behind the wheel.

Audi is currently refining its self-driving technology on the roads of Nevada where it was recently granted an autonomous vehicle license.

Audi has yet to announce a firm date for when we might see autonomous vehicles on the world's road, but driving enthusiasts don't have to panic quite yet. Stadler added that in an Audi "the driver will always be able to decide himself when he wants assistance.”
