Next Audi RS 6 to get 650 hp, spawn sedan?

Audi\'s next-gen RS 6 will allegedly share its engine with the Lamborghini Urus.

Audi introduced the all-new 2019 A6 at the Geneva auto show, which means the hot-rodded S6 and RS 6 models are right around the corner. Rumors from Germany shed insight into the latter.

Engineers have already started preparing the next-generation RS 6. German magazine Auto Bild reports the super-wagon will receive an evolution of the twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 engine also found in the Lamborghini Urus, among other models. It will make 650 horsepower -- 45 more than the outgoing model -- in this application.

The eight-cylinder will send the RS 6 from zero to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds, and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 189 mph. It will transfer its power to the pavement through an automatic transmission and Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system.

Auto Bild adds the next-generation RS 6 will launch as a station wagon, like all of its predecessors, which means it won't turn a wheel on American shores. However, buyers in key markets like China and the United States shun wagons; Audi of America consequently doesn't have an answer to the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E63. This could change soon.

Audi hasn't completely ruled out building a sedan variant of the RS 6, according to the report. It will likely make its debut shortly after the wagon model if it receives the proverbial green light for production.
